Executive Committee of the African Association of Veterinary Education Establishments together with the Dean, Faculty of Vet.Medicine, Chairman, Clinical Studies and Prof. Gitau

The Executive Committee of the African Association of Veterinary Education Establishments (2A2E-V) visited the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine during the afternoon of Thursday 9th May 2019. The committee which is comprised of ten (10) members, two (2) each from the five regions of Africa (West, North, East, Central and South) is mandated with the responsibility of steering the activities of the association. The association which was established in 2018 with the support of AU-IBAR through Live2Africa programme was launched in Cairo, Egypt on 26th July 2018 during the first Pan-African Conference of the association. The committee held its second meeting at the AU-IBAR offices in Nairobi from Tuesday 7th to Thursday 9th May 2019.

The objectives of the association are:

  1. To enhance collaboration among all the Veterinary Education Establishments.
  2. To establish continental quality assurance in veterinary education, training and research.
  3. To harmonise veterinary curricula, research and community service in the institutions by establishing reference standards.
  4. To enhance dissemination of innovations and good practice among the institutions.
  5. To build capacity among educators in the African Veterinary Education Establishments.
  6. To promote quality facilities at the institutions.

The purpose of the visit to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nairobi on Thursday 9th May 2019 was for the committee members to familiarize themselves with the facilities used to train veterinarians at the institution. They visited administrative offices, laboratories and lecture theatres at Chiromo and Kabete campuses. They were taken through these facilities by the Dean Prof. Maingi who is the current General Secretary of the association and the chairmen of the respective departments.

Those who visited the faculty were:

1.      Prof. Yalace Kaboret, President of 2A2E-V and the current Director General, Inter-States School of Science and Veterinary Medicine (EISMV), Dakar, Senegal.

 2.      Prof. Dietmar Holm, 2nd Vice-President of 2A2E-V and current Deputy Dean, Teaching and in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, South Africa

 3.      Prof. Clement Barikuma Innocent Alawa, Member of 2A2E-V Executive committee is the current Deputy Vice-Chancellors Academic, University of Abuja Nigeria since March 2019.  He was until his appointment in March 2019, the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and University of Abuja, Nigeria.

4.      Prof. Tadele Tolosa, Member of 2A2E-V Executive committee is the current Head, School of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Jimma University, Ethiopia

 5.      Prof. Jeanne Ngongang, is the Treasurer 2A2E-V and the current Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Yaoundé I, Yaoundé, Cameroon.

 6.      Dr Joyce Dontwi, who is from the Veterinary Service, Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Ghana attending the Veterinary Statutory Bodies meeting which was running concurrently with the 2A2E-V meeting
