PARASITOLOGY SECTION

Introduction

The Parasitology section is one of the three sections in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology

Human Resource

The section has a highly trained human resource base consisting of six academic members of staff (2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 1 Senior Lectures and 1 Lecturer), One Senior laboratory Technologists and 1 Technologist.

Teaching and Examination

On behalf of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology; the Parasitology section is involved in the teaching and examination of Parasitology to undergraduate students undertaking the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine; BSc. Wildlife Management; BSc. Fisheries and Aquaculture Management; BSc. Leather Science and Technology; BSc. Agricultural Extension and Education, and BSc. Biochemistry; and to all Postgraduate students in the Faculty specializing in parasitological related units. On Behalf of the Kenya Veterinary Board, the section also holds Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshops for Veterinarians and Para-Vets. On behalf of colleges offers Animal Science courses at Diploma and Certificate levels, the sections offers practical exposures on animal parasite and their identification.

Diagnostic services

The Parasitology section runs a laboratory involved in the recovery and identification of parasites from parasitological materials originating from domestic or wild animals, fish and bees

Research

The section has a competent team that undertakes research activities on parasitic oriented themes in domestic or wild animals, fish and bees

Consultancy

The section has a competent team that offers consultancy services on parasite control and testing of efficacies or resistance to anti-parasitic drugs or pesticides used in/on domestic animals

Outreach

The researcher in section also participate in dissemination of research findings and relevant information about parasites and their control to all stakeholder in the livestock sector through seminars, workshops and field days
