MASTER OF SCIENCE IN VETERINARY PATHOLOGY, MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY

Overview

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMME:
This programme about developing a cadre of human resource with broad understanding of
disease aetiologies, processes, and skills to establish how the latter impact on body structures and
functions. To cater for various causes of disease and different host responses and subsequently,
different diagnostic methods, this program has eight options namely:

                     (i) Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology

                     (ii) Bacteriology,

                     (iii) Veterinary Pathology,

                     (iv) Fish Science,

                     (v) Immunology,

                     (vi) Mycology,

                     (vii) Parasitology, and

                     (viii) Virology

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

This Programme is about training graduates to:

a. Identify and characterize bacteria, fungi and viruses of terrestrial and aquatic animals

b. Identify and characterize microbial, parasitic and other diseases of veterinary and medical importance.

c. Explain the interaction between fish breeding, production and its aquatic environment and its impact on fish health; and how fish survives in its aquatic environment.

 d. Apply diagnostic skills to undertake laboratory diagnosis and advice on prevention and control of animal and human diseases.

PHILOSOPHY AND RATIONALE

Philosophy, Rationale
To feed the over nine billion world population estimated by 2050, we will need 60% more food
than there is today. However, this may not be achieved anytime soon because diseases pose a
serious threat to livestock and aquaculture production in Kenya and beyond, leading to low
productivity and trade limitations. This calls for all the practitioners in livestock and aquaculture
production value chains to enhance their competencies in providing practical solutions. Using
various teaching and learning activities majorly, lectures, practical, demonstrations and seminars,
the graduates of this program are expected to:

      a) Identify and characterize bacteria, fungi and viruses of terrestrial and aquatic animals
      b) Identify and characterize microbial, parasitic and other diseases of veterinary and medical
          importance
       c) Explain the interaction between fish breeding, production and its aquatic environment
and its impact on fish health; and how fish survives in its aquatic environment
       d) Apply diagnostic skills to undertake laboratory diagnosis and advise on prevention and
control of animal and human diseases
       e) Apply knowledge and skills acquired to support research, teaching in tertiary institutions
and pursue doctor of philosophy studies in respective disciplines
