GIVING BACK TO THE SOCIETY

On Wednesday 12th February 2020, three third year Bachelor of Veterinary students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine namely Janet Masyula Mueni, Dadius Bichang’a and Raymond Kipkore visited the Kabete Veterinary Laboratories Secondary School at Uthiru in Nairobi County and gave motivational talks to the school’s students. The Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. N. Maingi accompanied the University students. The Chairman of the Board of Management (BOM), Mr. Anthony Wachira, the School Principal, Deputy Principal and other teachers, received the team.

The talks covered a wide range of topics including the importance of

  • Time management,
  • Respecting, listening and paying attention to the teachers,
  • Knowing ones strengths and weaknesses and working on them,
  • Respect for  ones parents and fellow students
  • Trusting in God
  • Balancing social life with studies
  • Remembering that “nothing is a miracle”, one has to work hard
  • Form four (4) is never too far from form one (1). Start now, do not procrastinate and imagine you will do it tomorrow.
  • Keeping in mind that failure in examinations is not the end of life. One can always refocus and spring back.

This was summarized in four (4) points:

  1. Put God first
  2. Believe in yourself
  3. Respect others
  4. Be committed to success.

The other topic covered was the important roles of a Veterinary Doctor in society. These roles include prevention and control of diseases that are transmitted between animals and humans (zoonoses). Veterinarians also treat and manage wild animals, pet animals and animals that humans use as a source of food, power for work and as a source of materials such as manure, biogas and hides and skins.
