INCEPTION MEETING OF THE “ENHANCED CAPACITY FOR AQUATIC RESOURCES IN EAST AND SOUTH AFRICA (ECARESA)” PROJECT IN LILONWE, MALAWI

Dr. R.M Waruiru, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Vet.Pathology, attended and participated in the inception meeting of the “Enhanced Capacity for Aquatic Resources in East and South Africa (ECARESA)” project in Lilonwe, Malawi from 1st to 5th November 2021. During the meeting, I was accompanied by Ms. Mary K. Inoti (senior accountant, Grant’s Office) who will be in-charge of financial matters in Kenya

 

Specific meeting objectives

i. To develop an MSc. curriculum in Aquatic Animal Health and Ecosystems Management, to

be hosted by Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Malawi

 

ii. To receive an overview of the Enhanced Capacity for Aquatic Resources in East

and South Africa (ECARESA) - NORHED II Project

 

iii. To review potential MSc./PhD/Post doc proposals

 

 Meeting outcomes

i: MSc. curriculum in Aquatic Animal Health and Ecosystems Management developed

 

ii. I gave a presentation entitled “An overview of training and research in aquatic animal    

    health in University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenya (attached)

 

iii. Potential MSc./PhD/Post doc candidates identified from collaborating partners (Kenya, 

     Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia)

 

iv. Funds allocated to UoN by ECARESA-NORHED II Project is US$ 4,371.16 (Vote No.

    500-675-068) and will be used to train two MSc. students and one post doc candidate

 

v. The MSc. program will start in May 2022 with course work undertaken in Bunda College,

     LUANAR. However, research work will be conducted in Kenya.
