Microbiology Section
The Microbiology section undertakes research and teaching of a biological science involved with the study of microscopic organisms that affect humans and animals. Microbiology is made up of several sub-disciplines, including: bacteriology (the study of bacteria), mycology (the study of fungi), and virology (the study of viruses, and how they function inside cells). These broad areas encompass a number of specific fields that include: immunology (the study of the immune system and how it works to protect animals and humans from harmful organisms and substances), pathogenic microbiology (the study of disease-causing microorganisms and the disease process (epidemiology and etiology)); microbial genetics (which is linked to molecular biology)
The Microbiology section has Level II laboratory facilities that undertake research and teaching in bacterial, fungal and viral aetiology of disease in animals. This facility is manned by highly trained technical and academic staff who are well versed and skilled in this field. It undertakes research and consultancies in antimicrobial drug resistance, media preparation, field investigations of complicated disease outbreaks, virus isolation, drug sensitivity and vaccine development. The section works closely with other institutions like ILRI, KEMRI, Foot and Mouth Disease Institute among others in capacity building of students engaged in applied research. The section trains students from all over Africa and is re-known for the high quality of PhD and MSc graduates. It is linked with local companies, dairy co-operatives, farmer associations and regulatory bodies that assist students to be grounded in the local environment, It is also linked to universities and colleges throughout the world and has several student exchange programmes
