Monday 13th November 2023, the Faculty of Vet. Medicine honoured iniative by the government to plant 15bn trees by 2032 to tackle the climate crisis and deforestation amid worsening impacts such as a severe drought in the country and the wider Horn of Africa region.

The exercise brought together students, staff and other stakeholders such as primary schools children and Non Governmental Organisations who planted various tree species which included indigenous trees such as the African olive, Blackwood, and Acacia, among others, with the aim to increase the country’s forest cover as well as promote biodiversity conservation.

The tree planting exercise is a vital initiative aimed at complementing the National Tree Growing Restoration campaign launched by President William Ruto. The project’s objectives are to promote reforestation, increase the country’s forest cover, mitigate climate change and foster sustainable development.

In support of this endeavor, the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) made available 150 million tree seedlings distributed across all 47 counties.
