POULTRY TRAINING FOR ILRI STAFF

A three-day poultry training was held for ILRI staff from 25th to 27th February 2020 at department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Upper Kabete. The training covered various aspects, including: poultry handling; poultry anatomy and physiology; bird inoculation routes; post-mortem procedure; sample collection and transportation; handling of samples and media inoculation at the laboratory; biosafety and biosecurity; and aspects of animal welfare. It also covered clinical signs and post-mortem lesions, with respect to avian salmonellosis. Emphasis was made that the animal procedures have to be done under supervision of a registered veterinarian. The training was organised by Prof. Lilly Bebora and opened by Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in presence of Chairman, Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology. Other facilitators of the training were: Prof. Philip Nyaga, Prof. Paul Mbuthia, Dr. Mahacla Odongo, Dr. Lucy Njagi, Ms. Anne Munene, Ms. Charity Gathenya and Mr. Ephantus Nyaga.
